Your summer evening
Guests arrive early to wander in the historic walled gardens, champagne glass in hand, and a convivial atmosphere reigns: the city seems far away. A short walk through the ancient orchard – passing a 300-year-old mulberry tree – takes you to the five-tier opera house which we’ve named The Theatre in the Woods.
In the atmospheric Duchess Restaurant, a three-course meal is served. You will recognise many of the rooms from BBC Ghosts: the Marquess’ library of thousands of books, the magnificent Stone Hall, the Red Drawing room and the Morning Room. The restaurant menu is also served in private pavilions in the Rose Garden (6-10 guests).
Bring your own picnic or order a hamper to enjoy in a pre-booked marquee or a private Indian pavilion, which are dotted around in quiet corners. For a more bucolic approach, fling down your rug anywhere in the formal gardens. Picnics must be booked at least seven days in advance.
