A Night with a Knight
Sir Bryn Terfel
13 JULY 2023
Bryn Terfel Gala
Our favourite Welsh knight is visiting us for just one evening.
There is something about the way he stands on that stage: he bewitches the entire auditorium.
A sumptuous selection of music embraces Wagner, Schubert, Debussy, Ivor Novello, Boito, Puccini and, of course, some Welsh folksongs. He shares the stage with soprano Ailish Tynan and Hannah Stone who was Harpist to HRH The Prince of Wales from 2011 – 2015.
Bryn starred in our Fliegende Holländer last summer and the theatre was packed to the Attic. His Falstaff (2021) was hilarious and his Tevye Fiddler on the Roof (2015) was heart-breaking.
Born in North Wales in 1965, Bryn Terfel entered London’s Guildhall School of Music in 1984, studying first with Arthur Reckless and later with Rudolf Piernay.
In 1988 he won the Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Scholarship and the following year graduated from the Guildhall, receiving the school’s Gold Medal.
Bryn’s career was launched when he won the Song Prize of Cardiff Singer of the World in 1989. Since then he has performed regularly at the most prestigious opera houses of the world, including Covent Garden, The Met, Opéra National de Paris, La Scala and Zürich Opera. Some of his most notable roles include Falstaff, Scarpia, Dulcamara, Wotan, Holländer, Boris Godunov, Sweeney Todd and Pasquale.
