Bernard was born in Manley, a beach-side suburb of northern Sydney and a ferry ride from the Opera House. He was educated in Goulburn, 100 miles south-west of Sydney. Bernard’s first job was at Australian Opera. On Saturday 14 September 1991 he arrived in the UK to work at Glyndebourne where he was Head of Planning and Company Management until 2009. For the 2010 season Bernard worked with Grange Park Opera and has been with the company for 10 years.
Bernard co-founded a charity, Sarva, working in India and Nepal to relieve poverty, sickness, distress and advance the education of young people. Sarva has supported 200 children’s education and sponsored 49 students up to Bachelor’s and Master’s degree levels.
Bernard’s other interests include film, travel, keeping fit, gardening.
