Piccolo Theatre in the Woods
Miss Havisham's Wedding Night
19 October 2019 14:00 & 16:30
This hour-long performance marks the inauguration of the Piccolo Theatre in the Woods – a theatre within a theatre – an intimate and casual space for 50 created in the stage right wing of our opera house.
Sarah Minns’ tour de force performance was given ★★★★ by Rupert Christiansen in the Daily Telegraph: “a superb corker of a double bill . . . an imaginative staging making vivid the plight of unliberated women”.
Costumed as an all-American housewife, and with David Eaton’s impassioned piano accompaniment, Sarah Minns enacts Coplands’ bracing portrayal of the isolation of Emily Dickinson and Miss Havisham’s Wedding Night by Argento – a fantasia on Great Expectations.
They span exultation and desperation; they are heartfelt, funny, spooky and impeccably sung with an incisive intensity.
The performance lasts 60 minutes with no interval. Tickets are priced at £30.
