WHAT TO WEAR
An evening at Grange Park Opera has opera as its centrepiece, but what happens before, during and after is also part of the fun. Most of the audience wear black tie and gorgeous dresses but for Oklahoma some respectable Surrey bigwigs dressed up as cowboys. And there is a very elegant lady who always comes as a suffragette. Wandering through the demi-Eden and bumping into a Valkyrie wearing a horned helmet adds to the magic of the evening.
Ultimately, sitting in the auditorium with vast emotions flying about and the artists creating epic performances, it is only right that the audience should join them by dressing in a special way.
Dressing is a kind of mental preparation. And elegance isn’t compulsory – far from it – but it has become customary and customs must not be shunned. They bind us together.
