PILLARS OF SOCIETY
A Colonnade for the theatre
The high cross-gartered brickwork is jubilant and the theatre is on the brink of completion.
Architecturally, the 3-metre deep colonnade mediates between the high geometric brickwork and the horizontal surface of the forecourt. It provides a “passeggiata” (the Italian leisurely stroll) for the audience to foregather and linger.
The colonnade comprises fourteen 3m larch pillars, 45cm in diameter. The larch trees were chosen from a Sussex estate a year ago and have been seasoning nicely (and resting in preparation for their important role in the opera world).
Below the colonnade there will be stone flags and beyond will be part brushed aggregates (with some fossils) and part compacted gravel . . . all melding into the organic disorder of the woods.
Pillars of Society will have their names carved onto their pillar.
So far four have been taken.
